Charles served articles and started practice as a company lawyer with Slaughter and May. But for over 30 years he was an equity partner of Pinsents in Birmingham, with a number of high profile company clients.
Through voluntary work with the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery and being an executor for a prominent Birmingham machine tool maker and art collector, he became interested in capital tax exemptions for heritage property. In the 1980s he joined the Tax and Political Committee of the Historic Houses Association and he began to advise a number of historic house owners.
Since his retirement from Pinsents he has been able to concentrate on this private client work, working first as a consultant with another Birmingham firm, Martineau. In 2009 he was delighted to find a new base with Pemberton Greenish and, over the ensuing year, Charles and his wife returned to live in London.
Charles continues to help the HHA with their Parliamentary lobbying and is currently editing their capital taxes manual. He is also a member of the Heritage Group of Lawyers.
